A man was attacked and knocked unconscious in an Inverness street after briefly talking to his assailant who punched him repeatedly on the face before he fell and banged his head on the pavement.

Benjamin Drummond of Wyvis Place, Inverness appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted assaulting his victim to severe injury and danger of life outside the Lochalsh Stores on the night of October 28, 2023.

He also admitted previous convictions which included similar violent offences, Sheriff Sara Matheson was told.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood told the court that Drummond propped his victim up against a wall after the assault, before leaving the scene.

She added that police found the casualty a little later and took him to Raigmore Hospital where a CT scan revealed bruising and bleeding to his brain and a suspected broken nose.

Defending, Marc Dickson said that the danger to life was "theoretical" and not actual, which Ms Hood accepted.

He added: "Although he has a bad record which does him no credit, his last offence was in 2022 and his circumstances have changed in recent years."

Sheriff Matheson deferred sentence until April 1 for a background report and allowed the 53 year old's bail to continue.

She went on: "You shouldn't read anything into that."
