Tributes have been paid to a man who devoted his life to his family and making others feel welcome in Inverness.

George Kong died peacefully in May following a courageous battle with cancer, aged 71.

He was a beloved husband, father, Koung Koung (grandfather), brother and friend.

Born in Mauritius in 1953, George embodied resilience, kindness, and unwavering dedication, according to his family.

Leaving school at 14 to support his family, he discovered a passion for cooking that would define his life.

Through talent and tenacity, he rose to become one of Mauritius’ most promising young chefs. In 1974, a football competition win earned him a flight to the UK - a single moment that reshaped his future.

He arrived in the UK in 1975 and began again, first in Brighton, then Aberdeen, and finally in Inverness - the city he came to call home.

It was during a short visit back to Mauritius that George met his future wife, Marie-Claire, in a university bookshop - a serendipitous meeting that would change everything.

Their courtship spanned continents and time zones, culminating in a love that would last a lifetime.

They married in 1981 and together built a life grounded in devotion, sacrifice, and shared ambition.

Raising their children, Derrick and Joelle, and running their restaurant hand-in-hand, they poured love into every corner of their lives.

In Inverness, George’s culinary career flourished. Leading Dickens Restaurant and later founding Kong’s, he became a pillar of the local dining scene.

His restaurants weren’t just places to eat - they were homes of warmth, community, and welcome. Regulars became friends. Staff became family. Under George’s quiet leadership, excellence was simply the standard.

Even in retirement, George never truly slowed down. He remained a constant presence in the lives of others - sharing his cooking, offering support, and showing up when it mattered most. His generosity of spirit never wavered.

He is survived by his wife Marie-Claire; children Derrick and Joelle; children-in-law Sarah and Arno; and his cherished grandchildren, Alvin, Olivia, Coby, and Nala. He will be remembered for his integrity, compassion, and the joy he brought to countless lives.

George’s legacy is etched in the stories, meals, and memories he leaves behind - and in the hearts of all who loved him.
