A 24-year-old Inverness man who starved his dog and denied it veterinary treatment for three months has been ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and banned from keeping animals for five years.

Morgan Walker, of Castle Heather Drive, previously appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted causing the animal unnecessary suffering by act or omission by failing to provide it with adequate nutrition or veterinary treatment between March 20 and June 20 last year, leaving it with chronic malnourishment.

The dog survived and was rehomed, defence solicitor Kevin Hughes told Sheriff Gary Aitken.

A background report had been called for and Mr Hughes explained his client was neglecting himself as well as his dog due to mental health issues and drinking too much.

"He has taken steps to address his addiction and mental health issues,” he said.

“This will not be repeated in the future. He has no intention of keeping pets in the future."
