CONTROVERSIAL plans for a hydro-electric scheme in the glens to the west of Inverness were defeated in the House of Commons to the delight of opponents.

Civic leaders and other dignitaries from the Inverness area packed into the public gallery to hear the debate in March.

The Inverness Courier, which had thrown its weight behind a strong campaign of opposition, said there was a sense of relief and thankfulness in the town at the outcome.

Many people heard the result late in the evening via the wireless while others heard by telephone from London and immediately rang around friends and acquaintances.

The Union Jack was hoisted on the flag pole at Inverness Town Hall which received many telegrams of congratulation. Several, including one from the Dowager Lady Aberdeen, were also received at the Courier's office.

In its leader, the paper stated: "To those MPs of all parties who resolutely refused to permit the natural resources of Glengarry, Glenmoriston and Inverness bartered away for the enrichment of southern financiers, the people of Inverness and inhabitants of the threatened glens will be forever grateful."
