Nairn Academy closed to S1 to S3 pupils for second day, Highland Council confirms, amid continued 'unprecedented' levels of staff sickness
PUPILS at a Highland school have been sent home for a second day after 15 members of school staff phoned in sick.
Calling the levels of sickness at Nairn Academy "unprecedented", Councillor John Finlayson the chairman of Highland Council's education committee said the situation was unfortunate.
A post on the schools Facebook page read: "Following the decision to close the school to S1 – S3 pupils on Monday as a result of 15 staff absences through illness we regret to confirm that the school will remain closed today, Tuesday December 10 to S1 – S3 pupils as indications suggest we will be similarly short-staffed.
"S1 – S3 pupils should be able to access classwork through their Chromebooks and, where possible, staff will post additional subject work for completion.
"We very much appreciate that this situation is highly unusual and appreciate the support of the community. We will provide further updates tomorrow through Facebook, blog, school closure line and Highland Council School Closure website."
Councillor John Finalyson, chairman of the Care, Learning and Housing Committee said: "This is clearly a very unfortunate and unplanned incident.
"However the school have taken the appropriate action as quickly as possible and has outlined how parents will be updated. Staff illness is something no one has control over and I wish those staff who are ill, a speedy and full recovery so they and all pupils can return to school.
"In the short term school staff and officers will also be looking at all options for getting as many pupils as possible back to school as quickly as possible."
