Elaine C Smith backs Wee Box appeal helping children in Colombia
Actress and comedian Elaine C Smith is backing a humanitarian charity’s appeal for donations to complete life-changing work in foreign countries.
The star is supporting the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund’s (Sciaf) annual Wee Box, Big Change appeal, which this year is focusing on emergency relief and peace-building projects in Colombia.
Earlier this month, the Rab C Nesbitt and Two Doors Down actress was granted the Freedom of Glasgow as part of the city’s 850th celebrations in recognition of her contribution to the arts.
Sadly, the gap between the haves and the have nots in this world continues to grow. Across the globe, you can help Sciaf be there for those people who are in the greatest need
She said of the Sciaf appeal: “We all want the best for our kids and grandkids. But sadly, in some parts of the world violence and poverty stop kids just being kids.
“Sciaf does an amazing job, helping some of the most vulnerable people in the world. In Colombia, they work with kids in Choco, the poorest and most dangerous part of Colombia.
“These kids face really tough choices and, regardless of their age, are put under pressure to join drug cartels or militias. Just unimaginable stuff.
“Sciaf’s partners work in novel ways to transform the lives of young people and their families. They even run a Rugby for Peace programme – yes, that funny shaped ball – which teaches kids about resilience, teamwork, commitment, leadership, playing fair, and having the courage to take on what life throws at them.”
Smith is appearing on billboards around Glasgow and as a guest on radio stations across the country as part of the appeal in the run-up to Easter.
She said: “Sadly, the gap between the haves and the have nots in this world continues to grow. Across the globe, you can help Sciaf be there for those people who are in the greatest need.
“So, c’mon Scotland, show you care by using your Wee Box to make a Big Change.”
