SCOTLAND will remain within the union after the No campaign's victory in Fife handed it an unassailable lead in the referendum.

Needing just over 85,000 more votes to guarantee the win Fife's voters backed the No campaign by 139,788 votes to 114,148.

Two hundred and twenty six ballots were spoilt. Turnout was 84.1 per cent.

Of the 32 local authority areas, only Highland Council is yet to declare its result.
