A driver has died as the result of a car fire that closed a minor road near Daviot village south of Inverness for around 30 hours.

The incident happened about half a mile from the A9 junction of the B851 road to Fort Augustus and the south Loch Ness area.

The force has also referred itself to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) for investigation. Pirc carries out independent investigations into “certain incidents involving the police”.

Police Scotland have clarified that there was “no pursuit” by officers of the car involved, which is believed to have left the road and dropped into a ditch.

Firefighters first received the emergency call at around 11.24 am on Wednesday and three appliances attended.

They left the scene, but had to return sometime later after the vehicle began emitting smoke again.

After the initial blaze, smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from some distance away.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We are investigating the death of the driver of a vehicle which left the carriageway of the B851 near Inverness shortly after 11.20 am on Wednesday, 2 October, 2024.

“Enquiries remain ongoing.

“The circumstances have been referred to The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner."
