Highland Sober Collective launches programme for those interested in alcohol-free events
A new group for those who have decided to go sober or are sober-curious is set to start meeting.
The Highland Sober Collective has been launched by Laura Johnston-Scott, who wants to see more alcohol-free social events for people in the area.
Having decided to stop drinking alcohol a few years ago, Laura quickly noticed that there was not much on offer in terms of social spaces for people who do not want to drink.
She said: “I found that alcohol wasn’t actually helping my mental health and it was just making me more anxious.
“I decided to stop for that reason and found that there wasn’t a lot of options for people in the evening if they weren’t wanting to go to a pub.”
Having applied for funding from Highland Alcohol and Drugs Partnership and Highland Third Sector Interface, Laura is now seeking 12 participants to meet together to form a ‘collective’ that can work on creating ideas for sober-based events.
Over six different dates, participants will meet together for engaging and fun workshops to help shape the creation of sober social events.
Workshops for participants include sea kayaking and paddleboarding and outdoor art sessions. All workshops are free for the 12 people taking part.
Laura added: “For those who want to join, we can also support with travel and childcare costs.
“We are really excited about this, and to be able to offer this opportunity in the Highlands.”
The Highland Sober Collective is not a treatment or recovery programme and does not offer professional support for alcohol or drug addiction. While some participants may be in recovery, this project is not recovery-focused.
The first event takes place on April 26.
