Drumnadrochit’s Falls of Divach beauty spot at risk of being cut off by road after River Coiltie washes away part of hillside
A road leading to a picturesque Highland waterfall beauty spot is at danger of being washed away by flood waters.
The unclassified road which leads up to the Falls of Divach car park, near Drumnadrochit, has been left fairly close to a sheer drop after the River Coiltie washed away part of the hillside.
Images shared with The Inverness Courier show the amount of scouring the river has done to the hillside, with exposed mud and trees sent sliding down towards the churning waters below.
Despite the precarious nature of the road, one worried onlooker said people kept going to the site to view the damage without realising that the bank could be at risk of further collapse with little to no warning.
It is understood police have since closed the road as a safety precaution.
The damage to the hillside comes after persistent and heavy rain caused widespread flooding in communities dotted all over the Highlands and led to the closure of multiple roads.
One of the worst affected was the A832 on the Black Isle, which was closed between Avoch and Fortrose after a landslide blocked the road at around 8.30am.
Police later warned that road could be closed “for some time” as a result of the damage.
