Over 100 children go on big bear hunt at Bellfield Park in Inverness as Sophie’s Story says thank you to supporters over last six months
Sophie’s Story held a Big Bear Hunt at Bellfield Park yesterday to say thank you to those who have supported them over the last six months.
The campaign was created after Sophie Mason was diagnosed with Batten Disease – a rare, incurable neurological disorder affecting children – on November 13.
Parents Keith and Lizzie Mason wanted to raise awareness of the condition, and so started up the Sophie’s Story Facebook.
When the news broke, many people wanted to find a way to help. With Keith having been significantly involved in football, the sporting community rallied around him as Josh Meekings donated his clean sheet bonuses for the second half of the season, while Scott Davidson raised £1400 by raffling a signed Ryan Christie shirt.
A legends match featuring former players from Inverness City and Clachnacuddin also took place at the end of February, while members of Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s women’s team will be taking on the Three Peaks challenge next month among other gestures from the community.
Away from sport, there was a Taylor Swift Fun Day at Drakies Hall in February, and Swim with Kayleigh organised a baby and child first aid class in March, the same month a sold out pub quiz was held at the Chieftain Hotel.
On top of all of those efforts, a Go Fund Me set up for Sophie’s Story to help with medical equipment and making memories with Sophie has now surpassed £21,000.
Overwhelmed by the level of support they received from family, friends and their local community, the Mason clan wanted to organise something to say thank you, which was this week’s Big Bear Hunt.
Throughout the day, 117 children completed the hunt at Bellfield Park, which also played host to face painting and glitter tattoos, a bouncy castle and a putting green as part of the event.
