PICTURES: Rainbow flags appear around Inverness as businesses mark the beginning of Pride month in the Highland capital
June is Pride month, and several businesses around Inverness have put up rainbow flags to mark the occasion.
Pride month is a time to celebrate different LGBTQ+ identities, while also marking progress that has been made in the fight for civil rights and highlighting the challenges that the community continues to face.
Support can come in different forms, with some companies and brands replacing their usual logos with rainbow-themed versions online, or else putting posts up on social media explaining why they support the LGBTQ+ community.
In Inverness, some businesses – and even the townhouse – have gone one step further in a very visible show of support, with the townhouse due to fly the rainbow flag once again over the weekend of June 10 and 11.
At various locations, flags have appeared. Some have elected to display the progress pride flag, while you can also see the trans flag in the Victorian Market.
As well as rainbow colours, the progress pride flag features black, brown, light blue, pink, and white stripes to bring added communities (marginalized people of color, trans people, and those living with HIV/AIDS and those who have been lost respectively) to the forefront, with creator Daniel Quasar saying: "The arrow points to the right to show forward movement, while being along the left edge shows that progress still needs to be made."
The trans flag is made up of five stripes and three colours – light blue, pink and white. Those colours represent the traditional colours for baby boys and baby girls, while the white represents those who are transitioning or consider themselves to have a neutral or undefined gender.
