Pictures: Inverness pauses to remember the fallen on the 75th anniversary of VE Day during coronavirus crisis
People across the Highlands paused at 11am today to observe the two-minute silence honouring the fallen on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
A small group gathered at Cavell Gardens, by the Inverness War Memorial, including David Cullen who previously served with The Queen's Own Highlanders.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, plans for the landmark event – which were to include a parade, public concert and reception – took place online, with a video message of thanks from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and a concert in addition to a service and the silence.
The anniversary marked the historic moment in 1945 which saw an end to six years of war in Europe following the surrender of the Nazi forces.
Highland Council supported the national public commemorations led by Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland in partnership with the Scottish Government.
Councillor Roddy Balfour, the council’s armed forces and veterans’ champion, said: “It was the day freedom triumphed over the forces of an evil dictatorship which had cost the lives of millions of people."
