PICTURES: Nairnshire celebrates Coronation with event-packed weekend
THE community in Nairnshire has joined the celebrations for the King's coronation with events of all kinds this weekend.
From Friday to Monday, communities and groups in the area marked the occasion with various gatherings and celebrations, from more solemn ceremonies to cheerful fairs and picnics.
Lord-Lieutenant for Nairnshire, George Asher, who was at the ceremony in London, said: "It was an honour to represent the people of Nairnshire at The Coronation of their Majesties at Westminster Abbey. The service, steeped in history and tradition was both moving and uplifting, an incredible experience. There were also several amusing moments, due to the occasional observations from Ant and Dec, who I found myself sitting next to!
"In Nairnshire many people enjoyed getting together to watch the Coronation with house parties and lunches for friends and family. The British Legion opened its doors to all for the weekend, holding a flag raising event on Saturday morning, prior to the ringing of local churches bells.
"On Sunday, Nairnshire participated in the The Big Lunch and Cawdor Community Council organised a Big Picnic, with a variety of stalls and music from the fabulous band Cabin Fever. Thankfully the sun shone and the party was well attended and enjoyed by young and old.
"Nairn Pipe Band made their first public appearance for some time on Castle Square in Nairn, celebrating and showcasing the wealth of new young talent that has recently joined the band. Watched by a very healthy and extremely appreciative crowd, the performance was followed by a fantastic spread of tea and cake at the British Legion.
"The United Reformed Church held a tea, scones and Pimm’s event for all, which was very well attended. A production line of wonderful volunteers, ensured the masses were fed and watered in a royally decorated church hall. Rev Stephen Manders even baked the scones! Donations were given for the Nairn Hospital Palliative Care Unit and a healthy sum was raised."
Today celebrations have continued with volunteers will assembling at the British Legion to help clean and tidy areas around the War Memorial and the High St as part of The Big Help Out.
Local volunteer Douglas Sewell was named a Coronation Champion for all his work with Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland.
Venues around Nairnshire celebrated with coronation-themed menus and specials on the day, like the spring fair at the 1645 Inn.
