Pupils at an Inverness school are preparing for an expedition to Tanzania where they will help to build and furbish homes alongside members of a community.

The trip involves 24 pupils and three staff members from Millburn Academy who are taking part in a house building programme with the Vine Trust, an international development charity.

A soup and pudding fundraiser for the two-week trip-of-a-lifetime starting in June raised £1200.

The pupils and staff will set off on the two-week trip at the end of June.

They will take part in the housebuilding programme alongside members of the Moshi community as well as cultural activities such as visiting local towns, restaurants and markets.

The trip will end with a weekend safari in the Serengeti National Park.

The soup and pudding fundraiser, held at Inverness Methodist Church, was attended by more than 100 people.

Trip leader Jason McClurg said Millburn Academy had been involved in two previous expeditions in 2016 and 2018 and was now looking forward to building on the number of homes the school had already helped to build.

“I am delighted that our fundraiser was such a success,” he said.

“At the fundraiser, pupils worked together as a team serving the food, working in the kitchen and tidying up,” he said.

“It was a great teambuilding exercise which is important as team work is going to be a key part of our expedition.”

Mr McClurg thanked the Methodist Church for allowing use of its facilities, all who went along and everyone who donated and contributed the soup, puddings and baking.

“My thanks also go to my fellow staff members going on the trip, Lorna Macleod and Sam Murphy for all their work in putting it together, the parents/carers of our pupils who have been supporting us from the start and, most of all, our great team of pupils who represented the school fantastically,” he said.

“Everyone commented on how polite, mannerly and friendly they were.

“They are such great ambassadors for the school and the staff team cannot wait to share this trip of a lifetime with them”
