PICTURES: #TeamHamish turn out with designs on splashpad built in memory of Hamish Hey from Nairn
Primary pupils have paid their own tribute to the Nairn youngster Hamish Hey.
The children took part in a project to decorate the railings of the Team Hamish splashpad at the Nairn Links with paintings and messages expressing why they love living in Nairn.
The splashpad was provided by a local fund-raising effort organised by Hamish’s family after his passing, aged eight, after a battle with cancer.
Sadly Hamish’s mum Susan died of cancer too before the family’s dream became reality.
Hamish’s granny Liz Bow said: “We have laminated all the pictures and paintings and attached them to the railings at the splashpad.
“All four feeder schools to Nairn Academy and the S1s and S2s at the academy, who would have been at school with Hamish, participated.
“Hamish was a pupil at Rosebank Primary and children from Auldearn and Millbank schools, as well as the academy, put up the paintings and drawings
“Unfortunately due to the logistics of Covid, it was not possible for Cawdor Primary to attend.
“The children have really shown a wealth of talent with paintings of the splashpad, beach, McDonald’s, ice-cream cones and the Team Hamish rainbow logo.
“Their teachers have obviously spent a lot of time encouraging them.
The splashpad opened several weeks ago and has been a popular attraction not just for children from Nairn but families from the Highlands and Moray.
“The response has been phenomenal,” Liz said.
“As we attached the paintings to the railings five bus-loads of children from Inverness arrived to spend the day at the beach in Nairn and the splashpad was top of the agenda for them to visit.
“We are overwhelmed by the wonderful support from Nairnshire schools and the fabulous display. It’s wonderful to see the enjoyment and fun the children are getting from the facility which Hamish and Susan would have loved.”
