The site of a mock ‘castle’ near Loch Ness could be redeveloped into holiday apartments.

A planning application has been lodged with Highland Council to create 10 apartments in the grounds of the Loch Ness Lodge Hotel at Drumnadrochit.

The proposed apartment block would be located on the site of the existing mock ornamental castle which previously served as a tourist attraction but has been unused for several years.

A supporting statement submitted by Blueprint Architecture, of Tain, on behalf of its clients states: “Drumnadrochit and the Loch Ness area has always been a popular tourist destination and there is a recognised accommodation shortage due to increased demand for holiday and worker accommodation.

“Our client’s intention is to redevelop the unused area of the site to increase the accommodation offering that will supplement the hotel, create jobs and help boost the local economy.”

The proposed development would be a two-storey block on the site located on the initial stretch of the north side of the A831.

Blueprint Architecture says: “Our brief was to design a block of 10 apartments with a modern architectural design using natural materials that will sit well within the landscape.

“The new building requires to be separate from the main body of the hotel located on the footprint of the existing ‘castle’ structure.

“Many tourists and workers prefer accommodation that is separate from the hotel as it feels more private and also avoids being disturbed by hotel operations, functions or events.”

The separation would also reduce disruption to the hotel during construction, the company says.

The proposed rectangular apartment block features a pitched metal roof and access stairs at each gable linked by a first-floor covered walkway.

The supporting statement concludes: “The proposed development will create an supplement an existing business and will assist address the shortage of accommodation in the area.”

The council’s transport planning team notes that the site plan shows 11 car parking spaces which meet the current guidelines.

It has no objection to the application subject to a condition to improve public transport provision which meets policy requirements.

The applicant would be required to provide a new bus shelter and real time information at the existing bus stop on the east side of the A82.
