Police probe intimidation claims by Better Together activisits
Police are investigating claims an “aggressive” Yes supporter intimidated Better Together activists on the campaign trail.
The complaint was raised by MP Danny Alexander’s office. His spokesman told police a man, believed to be supporting the Yes campaign, approached activists and started taking photographs of them while they were putting up poster boards.
He said: “On Monday, at Leachkin Road in Inverness, at about 7pm, activists of ours were putting up posters around Inverness and they were approached by a man who was aggressive and started taking photos of them and photos of their car registration plates. He was generally acting in an intimidating manner.”
The spokesman also claimed Yes activists were removing Better Together posters within hours of them going up.
He added: “In Aviemore, 32 boards were put up and by the next day they were all removed. I have been contacted by Yes supporters who say the same thing is happening to their boards but I can’t see Better Together campaigners doing that.
“There is certainly a lot of CCTV in the High Street in Inverness for the police to check to see what’s happening to some of the boards that are being vandalised.”
A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed that reports had been received and said enquiries are ongoing.
A Yes campaign spokesman in Inverness said it would be inappropriate to comment on the Better Together camp's claims while the police investigation was active.
It comes after police launched an investigation after pro-independence Yes signs in Moray were daubed with paint saying “Nae”
Two field posters in Lossiemouth and another near Roseisle were vandalised within hours of being put up.
