Police seek home for 80-year-old love letters
INVERNESS police have been overwhelmed by the response to an appeal to find the owner of love letters dating back almost 80 years.
The letters were found in a box, also containing wedding invitations, which was handed in to Northern Constabulary in December last year after it was dsicovered floating in the Caledonian Canal at Dochgarroch.
"There are a number of love letters and wedding invitations of great sentimental value inside the box and surprisingly, they are very well preserved for having been in the water," said a Northern Constabulary spokeswoman.
The wooden box contained more than 20 letters addressed to Miss S.R. Paterson, "Bidston", Ross Avenue, Inverness, postmarked Edinburgh, 19th August, 1934.
It is understood they were for Sarah Rose Paterson, from her soldier boyfriend Robert Wright.
The lost and found department at Burnett Road police station failed to trace or identify the owner and it was also discovered the Ross Avenue address no longer existed.
More than 400 people have helped publicise the police appeal using social networking website Facebook.
In one online post, Elizabeth Boulton told police a Sarah Rose Paterson, born in 1909 in Kenneth Street, Inverness, married a Robert Wright in 1937 in Inverness and died in 1994.
"Thank you so much everyone, particularly Elizabeth Boulton," added the force spokeswoman.
