Green-fingered fans of the humble spud will get the chance to choose from dozens of varieties when North Kessock's popular annual potato day returns next month.

The event, which attracts hundreds of visitors, works to raise awareness of how far some of our food travels before it reaches our plates, while also giving people the chance to pick up some lovely fresh potatoes and other veg.

This year's potato day will feature more than 40 varieties of seed potato to grow, as well as onion sets, a seed swap service, advice, competition and even a café.

The event will take place at North Kessock Village Hall from 10.30am to 2.30pm on Saturday, March 1.

Entry is £1 (kids go free) and spuds will be 20p each. People are advised to bring cash, preferably coins, as well a bags/pencils for their spuds.

Transition Black Isle's Anne Thomas said: "The group has been working very hard to raise awareness of how far some food on our plates travels. What better way to cut our carbon emissions than a leisurely stroll down the garden for some lovely fresh potatoes and other vegetables?

"They will also be having a 'seed swap' stall where people can bring along seeds they have saved from their gardens or packets or part packets they don't need, or simply give a donation for seeds someone else has brought."

Potatoes will also be available at subsequent community markets in Cromarty (Saturday, March 8), Culbokie (Saturday, March 15) and North Kessock (Saturday, March 29). Any leftovers will be donated to local schools and charities.
