Krista Munro is the acting deputy head teacher at the school.

The 43-year-old has been at the primary for a year and has been working with its reading leaders, pupils, staff and family team towards the school’s gold accreditation through The Scottish Book Trust.

She said: “We currently have our silver award and a fantastic reading ethos in our school.

“As part of working towards our gold accreditation we have an aim to encourage the school and the wider community to read more and have more access to stories.

“We want to remove any barriers to reading and make this available to everyone in our community!”

The school has set up a children’s swap shop and an adult’s swap shop for books - which are both regularly used by its community.

Krista continued: “The reading leaders decided they wanted people to ‘Read While They Wait’ in some of our local community spaces and businesses.

“They have created a booklet sharing their favourite stories with QR codes linking to these being read aloud on Youtube.

“They thought this would be a good idea as some places may not have space for books, and if people find reading stories tricky, then listening to them was another way to access this.

“They have shared a wide range of books and think grown-ups seeing them will help them know what children in their families would like and sometimes grown-ups like younger books too!”

So far, the booklet has been placed in the local pharmacy, shop, community centre, laundrette, and Family Resource Centre.

The children have a list of other spaces they are yet to approach to expand their ‘Read While You Wait’ initiative.

Next Week, on Tuesday, April 1, the group will also place and share a Community Book Trail.

There are 10 QR codes to find, which will reveal the title of a book.

If you find all 10 you can go to the school and collect a small prize.

Krista added: “We hope lots of the community get involved in this, from nursery children to our senior citizens.

“As long as you have a device to scan a QR code, you should be able to take part. “Answer slips can also be collected from the school.”

The reading leaders group is made up of children who have volunteered from all classes throughout the school, Krista, and some PSAs.

The group has worked hard to create a “positive reading for pleasure culture” in the school and now wants the same for their community.
