Inverness riverside flood gates closing due to rising water in River Ness, says Highland Council
Riverside flood gates in Inverness are being closed due to raising water levels in the Ness, Highland Council has announced.
The news comes amid an active amber Met Office weather warning for rain in Inverness and a large chunk of the River Ness catchment area.
And it follows a host of flood-related incidents and landslips across the north on Hogmanay.
Confirming the closure of all floodgates from the Ness Bridge to the river mouth, a Highland Council spokesperson said: “All floodgates along the River Ness, Inverness are currently being closed due to rising water levels and the risk of flooding.”
The flood gate closures follow earlier word on Tuesday that the Ness Islands had been closed to the public due to flooding
Walkers have been warned that the popular beauty spot is also likely to remain off-limits until at least January 3, owing to the weather forecast for the coming hours and days - which is predicting further rain, snow and ice up to and including January 2.
Highland Council said: “The Ness Islands have been closed due to high flood risk. The public will be notified when the situation changes, however, this closure is likely to remain in place until Friday, January 3 due to current weather forecasts.”
