Nairn club ready to make waves thanks to donation
Nairn Coastal Rowing Club is set to embark on its first spring aboard its new vessel after purchasing vital safety equipment.
A community effort saw the construction of the club’s first vessel, Dulsie, last autumn, and now a £1000 Bags of Help grant from Tesco has funded the purchase of life jackets, flares, radios and anchors for the 22ft, five-person boat.
Club trustee Bob Ferenth said: “It took a real community effort to launch the Dulsie and we’re grateful to everyone who helped us in our mission to get out on the water in Nairn.
“Our more experienced oarsmen have already been out rowing over the winter months and we’re looking forward to the better weather, when our 50-strong membership looks set to continue to grow.”
Tony McElroy, head of communications for Tesco in Scotland, said: “Bags of Help has been making waves across Scottish communities since it launched in 2015.
“It really is a fantastic opportunity for local community groups to get the funding they need for their wish list projects and we’re delighted to see Nairn Coastal Rowing Club thriving following its grant award.”
Tesco works in partnership with charity Groundwork and greenspace scotland to deliver its Bags of Help funding scheme, which awards grants to a variety of local projects across the country, with recipients voted for by customers in store.
Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project, and organisations can apply online.
