Fairways fire: ‘Silver lining’ as some items salvaged
The owner of a business that was destroyed in a blaze has said some things have been saved.
SJ Travel Centre was one of several businesses that were the victims of an arson attack on March 9 at Fairways Business Park.
Last week the entire contents of SJ Travel Centre were loaded into a skip and taken away.
SJ Travel Centre owner Julia Macleay said: “Watching years of hard work, memories, and a whole lot of history disappear like that, was absolutely heartbreaking.
“But in true SJ style, there’s always a silver lining. Some absolute legends at the skip yard managed to save a few very special things for us.
“Donna was reunited with her 26-year-old travel book and Amanda got hers back too.
“My tin and the number plates from my chauffeur vehicle were also rescued
“Just a few small treasures, but they mean the world.
“So now we move forward, with a small bag and a tin of memories, but with massive determination and optimism.”
SJ Travel Centre is still operating from Robertson House on Shore Street and will possibly have a new unit in the Longman while Fairways gets rebuilt.
She added: “So here’s to a new week. When disaster strikes, you pick yourself up, dust off, and crack on. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.
“We’re still here. We’re still strong. And we’re not going anywhere.”
