Skol! The Vikings are coming again
AN EXHIBITON on the Vikings and their attitude to death has opened in Inverness.
Valhalla – Life and Death in Viking Britain will run until September 2, and climaxes with an interesting sounding conference entitled Wild Women, Strong Ale and the Walking Dead.
The exhibition is coming to Inverness Museum & Art Gallery from the famous Jorvik Viking Centre in York.
It will show how the Vikings commemorated and celebrated their dead by bringing together important Viking burial finds that explore everyday Viking communities in Britain 1,000 years ago.
Significant artefacts including two Viking-age skeletons, are included.
A programme of Viking-themed events, children’s activities and storytelling will take place alongside the exhibitions, bookable through Inverness Museum & Art Gallery.
Viking Craft workshops for adults include stone carving, ropemaking, jewellery-making, Nal Binding (a fabric creation technique predating both knitting and crochet) and Fair Isle knitting.
The Wild Women, Strong Ale and the Walking Dead conference is on August 25 in Inverness Town House, and a Viking Fun Day will be held the following day, ending with a procession led by this year’s Lerwick Up Helly Aa Jarl’s squad.
