SNP names Royal Mail worker as candidate in Inverness Central by-election
The SNP has selected Martin Macgregor as its candidate for next month’s by-election in Highland Council’s Inverness Central ward.
The election will take place on September 26 and has been prompted by the retirement of former Labour councillor Bet McAllister.

Inverness Central Councillor Bet McAllister to retire
Mr Macgregor, a long-time resident of Merkinch, has nearly 30 years of experience at Royal Mail starting as a postman and now as a senior union representative.
He said it was an honour to be chosen as the SNP candidate for Inverness Central ward where the other councillors are Michael Cameron and Kate MacLean, both of the SNP.
“This is my home, and I understand the issues we face—from the need for better local services to improved bus connections and transport infrastructure as well as the need to tackle very real social and housing issues across the area,” he said.
“My experience as a union representative has shown me the importance of listening and taking decisive action.
“While there are significant challenges we need to work on together, there is also incredible work being done by local community groups that we can build upon.
“My SNP colleagues, Councillors MacLean and Cameron, are already doing great work on this, and if elected, I look forward to joining them in ensuring that our community's concerns are not only heard but effectively addressed."
Inverness City SNP convener Munro Ross said Mr Macgregor brought a deep connection to the community and a clear vision for addressing its needs and had built a career on listening to people and standing up for their interests.
"Martin knows this community inside and out,” he said.
“His dedication to improving local services and infrastructure, coupled with his hands-on experience as a union rep, will make him a powerful voice on Highland Council.
“Martin has been an active campaigner for improvements in the local area for years — becoming a councillor is the natural next step in his commitment to make a difference for people living in Inverness Central, his home area.”
