An Aviemore dog owner was faced with an agonising choice after her springer spaniel broke a leg in three places - either to have the limb amputated or publicly raise £4000 for a specialist operation.

Sorcha Reid confirmed that she had got it right, thanks to the generosity of those who donated the money through her GoFundMe page.

“Thanks a million” she posted, after the £4000 target was passed by more than £200, before telling the Strathy: “The support was amazing.

“Talisker has had the surgery. We just got her back from St Andrews at the weekend.

“The surgery was successful and now she has a long recovery of six weeks so she’s house bound for a while, keeping her free of any risk of infection.

“I’m glad to say it’s all gone well.”

The two-year-old pup had taken a bad tumble while running in her beloved local hills and an examination showed her elbow had been fractured in two places.

But her owner discovered that her pet insurance would not cover the costs of a tricky operation to keep Talisker on all four paws.

Amputation would have incurred less than half the £4000 bill for the trip to Fife.

So the funding page was set up and it was not long before generous contributions were coming in.

Talisker will celebrate her second birthday in June - hopefully with a good run in the mountains.
