Special service in Nairn set to commemorate D-day
Nairn will commemorate D-Day and the Normandy landings next week with a special service at Nairn Links.
Residents are invited at the memorial, which commemorates the training carried prior to D-Day, at 10.30am.
The service will include a history of the memorial – which was unveiled on the same date back in 1987 – followed by the story of the 3rd division, a tribute, the act of remembrance and ending with the laying of the wreath.
Nairn Legion President, Bob Towns, said: “Just as General Ian Robertson, Ronald Gordon and others thought it fitting in 1987 to erect the memorial it is only right that we commemorate the 80th Anniversary here in Nairn.
“Not only to recognise the participation of the 3rd UK Division but also, to pay tribute to those from all three services and our brave allies who took part. Of those who trained on these beaches, 630 were to be casualties on D-Day.
“This figure was multiplied many times on the various code-named beaches of Normandy. This must not be forgotten.”
Provost of Nairn, Laurie Fraser, said: ”I am really looking forward to it, I am sure it will be a nice event on the day. We hope there will be a good number of people attending.
“There might not be many veterans from back then who are still alive, but we hope to see a lot of their family members attending.”
Legion branches, veterans and service association members living in Nairn and surrounding areas are encouraged to join and participate.
