INVERNESS man Steven Geegan will never forget the day Maureen the elephant came to visit his beloved grandmother in a ward at Highland Hospice.

Now, 28 years later, Steven is looking to give something back to the charity by dancing in this year’s Strictly Inverness competition.

It was 1988 when the hospice went to such extreme lengths to grant his beloved nana’s wish to see an elephant.

Steven, of Kincraig Drive, explained: "The circus was in town and pitched up at Bught Park. She kept mentioning the elephants and how she wanted to go down and see them. We phoned the organisers and asked if it would be possible to bring one to the window and they just said to leave it with them.

"The hospice had these big massive doors which folded open and the elephant was able to come in and actually into her room. It just shows you the length the hospice will go to make people happy."

Steven (34) is now on a mission to raise as much money as possible for the charity who helped care for grandmother Marion Mackintosh all those years ago.

He said: "That’s one of the main reasons I decided to enter Strictly - to give something back."

Mr Geegan is busy fundrasing for the competition, which is backed by the Highland News Group.

The manager of Tesco at Inverness Retail Park, he has already held several fundrasing events.

Tickets for Strictly Inverness, which runs from Wednesday, May 11 to Saturday, May 14, will go on sale at the beginning of March.
