Study of rail crossing in Nairn
A FEASIBILITY study which will explore the possibility of installing platform lifts at Nairn railway station to improve access between platforms is being undertaken by Network Rail.
The Victorian station has a steel stepped bridge crossing the railway line and campaigners have been pressing for improved access between the two platforms for several years.
Recently ScotRail resurfaced a crumbling car park near platform two and installed a shelter for passengers on that platform.
But campaigners, including Nairn Access Panel (NAP), say the permanent solution needed is a new bridge with a lift.
NAP secretary Seamus McArdle said a new timetable was introduced in December increasing the number of trains from Inverness to Elgin.
“With the old service, seven trains stopped at platform one and five at platform two. Now five stop at platform one and 12 at platform two. So they have improved the service between Inverness and Elgin but to the detriment of travellers from Nairn,” he said.
ScotRail provides a special assistance service for help on and off the train for people with disability.
A Network Rail spokesman said the study was at an early stage and more information will be provided to the community as options are developed.
