MOST people in Inverness will be sticking close to home this summer, according to a hospitality firm.

Travelodge says 78 per cent of the city’s households are opting for a British destination for their holidays this year, giving a £25 million boost to the economy.

Seaside venues will be the top choice, with 47 per cent of people heading to the coast, making city breaks (29 per cent) and rural settings (27 per cent) the second and third most popular options.

The Travelodge Holiday Index, which surveys 1500 adults on their summer holiday, has found that Brexit uncertainties and the revival of local tourist attractions have contributed to the staycation trend, as well as the will to make holidays more cost-effective.

According to their findings, 42 per cent of Inverness holidaymakers will take in a variety of locations on their break instead of simply visiting and staying in one locale.

Travelodge spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: “Our annual holiday index reveals that we have become a mighty ‘Staycation Nation’ and are doing our bit for the local economy.

“We are also seeing a growing trend in Scots taking multi-location holidays and more short breaks.

“Taking regular shorter breaks helps to maximise your holiday time, recharge your batteries, discover what makes Blighty so great and also provides interesting content to share on our social news feeds.”

Ranking first in the index with an 85 per cent of staycationers is Edinburgh, followed by Glasgow.
