An Inverness supermarket has donated much-needed laptops to pupils who may otherwise have had to do without.

Asda has donated 10 computers to Inverness Royal Academy’s nurture and inclusion team for distribution to youngsters in need.

Helen Robertson, the store’s community champion, said the donation of computers to the school was part of a drive by the supermarket giant to give greater support those in need of a helping hand.

"Asda has contributed more than 6000 laptops to schools throughout the UK," she said.

"Inverness Royal Academy was successful in its application to the fund.

"At first I thought I would receive seven laptops, so I was delighted when this was increased to 10."

She added: "These laptops will be used for children who through no fault of their own do not have one."

Ms Robertson said she would welcome enquiries from any individuals or groups who would like help from Asda to achieve something in their local community.

Teacher Chris McCormick said: "Inverness Royal Academy and Asda have developed a close link via ‘the Bothy’ nurture base in school and Helen Robertson, the community champion.

"This partnership has been vital at reaching out to pupils and families who are in most need of support."

He added: "Lockdown has brought about additional challenges to some of our most vulnerable children in society and the school have developed some key partnerships such as the one with Asda.

"Food parcels for families have been delivered to many families and Asda have also supported some of the work we do in school with pupils who may go without breakfast and lunch via our nurture groups in the Bothy."

He continued: "The Asda Foundation, in conjunction with Helen Robertson, Asda community champion, have been brilliant.

"With the donation of 10 laptops that can be used for many pupils to support learning and embracing digital technology and we thank them for this vital donation.

"We continue to work closely with partner agencies to give those children who need help the most as best a start as they can in life."
