Have you been in Torvean park, seen some odd looking chain baskets and wondered what they are? Well they are a part of one of the fastest growing sports, disc golf.

The objective of the sport is to start off on one of the tees and get a disc into the end basket of the hole you're on. Similar to golf but instead of a ball and club you swing, it’s a much more affordable disc that you throw.

Chairperson of Inverness Disc Golf Club Lloyd Wells, described his initial introduction to the sport. He had always been into playing football but a combination of getting older and a dodgy knee meant he wasn’t able to enjoy it as he used to.

That’s when his son Tom invited him to play disc golf and he took to it instantly. Describing it as a sport “anyone can play, any fitness level, young or old, any gender. Everyone can join in”.

All you need to take part is a disc and unlike in golf you don’t need to join with a membership or book a slot.

So can you just use any old frisbee you might have? Well yes but you might find it more difficult.

Llyod recommends using proper discs which you can find online or available to buy at their open day.

The Inverness Disc Golf Club are hosting an open day on the 4th February at their course at Torvean park at 11AM for anyone who is interested in joining and they’ll also be giving discs for people to borrow to try for a game as well as offering refreshments.

If anyone is keen on trying a game but can’t make the open day no worries, you can get in contact with them on their facebook page or by scanning one of their posters at one of their tees on the course and arrange a time to borrow some equipment.

With competitions and tournaments planned for this summer, now is a great time to start your disc golf journey.
