Highland road police officers charged 56 drivers with speeding offences last week

A total of 56 drivers were charged with speeding offences last week in the North Highland region.

It comes as Road Policing and Safety Camera Unit officers took part in the National Speeding Campaign between Monday, March 17 and Sunday, March 23.

The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and help to improve road safety.

Among those stopped was a 19-year-old man detected driving at 106mph on the A95 near Auchendean on 22 March, 2025.

He was charged in connection and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Constable Gary Dunnett, of Road Policing, said: “Speeding not only puts the driver at risk but also endangers passengers, other road users, and pedestrians.

“Safe driving speeds ensure that you can react to hazards in time and prevent accidents from happening. Driving at high speeds can impair a driver’s ability to judge distances, gaps in traffic, or the speed of other vehicles, making it harder to make safe decisions.”

Officers were in attendance at a number of locations in the region, including the A82, A835, A832, A9, A836, A87, A95 and A96.

Eric Dunion, Manager, Police Scotland Safety Camera Unit said: “Operating within road policing the safety camera units deploy at locations where they will have the greatest casualty and collision reduction potential.

“Prior to enforcing, a location needs to have met criteria, including injury collisions and a speed profile and be agreed with stakeholders, including Transport Scotland, Police Scotland and the relevant road authority.

“The North Safety Camera Unit is responsible for the administration of average, mobile and fixed cameras across the Highlands, Moray, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Dundee and Perthshire.”
