A trio of teenagers have raised almost £4000 for Highland Hospice by completing a marathon over 24 hours.

Maisie MacLennan, Helen Thomson and Julia Ferguson, who are all 15, began their mammoth effort at 7pm on Friday and completed the 26-mile feat by 6pm the next day.

For the first four hours they ran one-and-a-half miles every hour and then reduced this to one mile every hour to cover the remaining distance of a marathon.

Maisie, who lives in the Holm Mills area, said: “It was very tiring on my legs but it was good that we have raised the money.

“We were aiming for £300 and did not expect to get that much.”

Her dad ,Graham MacLennan, said he was impressed at the girls’ efforts.

“It’s remarkable, it’s unbelievable and it’s really, really good,” he said.

He said they used their garden as the base for the fundraising effort and every hour they managed to cover the required distance on the streets nearby before returning home.

Maisie and Helen attend Highland Elite Sports Academy and both Maisie and Julia are members of Inverness Harriers athletics club.

A hospice spokeswoman said it was an amazing effort, adding: “The girls decided to take on this challenge to celebrate Maisie’s 15th birthday and to raise funds for Highland Hospice in these challenging times. It is such an incredible achievement for the girls.”
