The safest driver in a traffic management company lost his clean driving licence when he was caught out in a new 30mph stretch of rural road by a police speed trap.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that 37-year-old lorry driver Andrew Cruickshank, of Mackintosh Road, Inverness was driving along the B9039 near Ardersier on May 8 last year when he was clocked travelling at 50mph in a 30mph zone.

Fiscal depute Victoria Silver told Sheriff Ian Cruickshank that the road starts with a 60mph but then reduces to 30mph for a stretch of single carriageway before becoming 50mph.

She added: "It was a relatively new speed restriction."

Defending, Clare Russell told the court that her client was the safest driver in the company with a clean licence and he was "a conscientious driver".

Cruickshank was fined £470 and had his licence endorsed with three penalty points after admitting the charge of speeding.
