Three Queen's Own Highlanders killed in 1991 'friendly fire' Gulf War incident
THREE young soldiers were killed in the closing stages of the Gulf War when an American aircraft inadvertently fired on British forces.
Private John Lang (19), who grew up in Nairn, Private Neil Donald (18), of Forres, and Private Martin Ferguson (21), of Inverlochy, near Fort William, were serving with the Queen's Own Highlanders when the incident occurred in February.
They were among nine British soldiers killed when the A-10 aircraft fired on their Warrior armoured personnel carriers during the heat of battle inside Iraq.
The war was sparked by Iraq's invasion of neighbouring Kuwait in August 1990.
A spokesman for the Queen's Own at regimental headquarters in Inverness said they had been serving in the Gulf since the end of 1990.
"It is terribly sad when anyone is killed, particularly in a family regiment like ours where we all know each other well," he said.
