A former Highland councillor, who has died aged 90, has been remembered as being forward thinking and a hard worker.

Norrie Donald, who lived at Dores, served as an Independent representative on the council for 18 years from 1999 to 2017.

Inverness Provost Glynis Campbell Sinclair was among those who have paid tribute to him.

"I have very fond memories of working with Norrie who was a very supportive colleague and friend," she recalled.

"He was a very forward thinking and popular councillor and had a great sense of humour.

"I missed him very much when he retired.

"My thoughts and deepest condolences go to his family at this sad time."

Council Convener, Councillor Bill Lobban, said: "Norrie was a very well-liked local councillor and a strong supporter of his local community.

"His former colleagues and I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends for their loss."

Mr Donald was elected in 1999 and 2003 to serve the Culduthel ward and in 2007 and 2012 he was elected to serve Inverness Ness-side.

Throughout his service, he was a member of many council committees and joint boards.

In 2002, he was vice chairman of the social work committee and in 2003, he was chairman of the transport, environmental and community services committee.

Former Liberal councillor Angus Dick, who served the neighbouring Hilton ward when Mr Donald represented Culduthel, also paid tribute.

"He was a very hard worker for his ward – those were the days when you had one councillor for one ward," he recalled.

"He could be quite a jolly person at times and he was not frightened to speak his mind."

Mr Donald's home once housed the UK's smallest post office which at one time was also dubbed the smallest in the world.

Housed in a 4ft by 7ft broom cupboard, it was run by his ex-wife, Lily King, until she died two years ago, aged 72.
