Inverness Culloden Academy teacher was ‘an inspiration’

Tributes have been paid to a former Culloden Academy teacher who has passed away.

John Fraser and Son funeral directors have shared the news that Shirley Barr (nee Booth) passed away peacefully at home on February 19.

Sharing the news at the request of Mrs Barr’s family they said: “Peacefully at home on 19th February 2025, Shirley (nee Booth), aged 72 years, former teacher, Culloden Academy, Inverness.

“Dearly loved wife of John, much loved mum of Julie and Marianne and a proud granny.

“Funeral Ceremony on Wednesday 5th March at 2pm in Inverness Crematorium. All welcome to attend. No black ties please. Family flowers only but donations for the Macmillan Cancer Suite may be given at the ceremony.”

The news prompted a number of tributes from those who had known Mrs Barr.

Gillian Cobban said: “Mrs Barr was just the loveliest teacher and such an inspiration to me.

“I have such fond memories of being in her classes and the school trips to France. Sending love to all the family. Xxx”

Lindsay Shepherd said: “Shirley was not only a former colleague of mine but she was an inspiration to all modern language pupils. Repose en paix ma chérie.”

And Angela Chatah said: “So sorry to be reading this. She was a wonderful person and a great teacher. She will be missed x”
