Ultra-distance runner Steven Mackay, the former Brora Rangers and Ross County football star, is aiming to raise £50,000 for MFR Cash for Kids from tomorrow by running the entire North Coast 500 (NC500) tourist trail in 10 days
A footballer turned ultra-distance adventurer is due to start his latest extraordinary running challenge tomorrow.
Inverness-based Steven Mackay will set off from Inverness Cathedral at 8am and plans to run around the North Coast 500 (NC500).
The former Ross County midfielder, is aiming to pound out the entire tourist route in just 10 days.
Last June, Mackay succeeded in raising more than £20,000 for Moray Firth Radio’s Cash for Kids charity by running 104.8 miles non-stop from Wick to Inverness.
And, the year before, he completed an 80-mile dash from Inverness to Brora in around 18.5 hours, raising more than £17,000 for the same cause.
He is planning to run around 50 miles a day – effectively two marathons a day – and he said he was feeling apprehensive about what lay ahead.
"I'm looking forward to it but I am extremely nervous – the closer it's getting the more nervous I am getting," he added. "I am excited about it, of course I am."
The 40-year-old said that the support he had received so far was amazing ahead of his attempt at the beautiful 516-mile coastal route.
