Inverness police stand-off ends with arrest; Police Scotland officers had been called to Smithton Park in Smithton after report of person with ‘blunt weapon’ causing disturbance
A man has been arrested after a stand-off with armed police in an Inverness neighbourhood on Monday.
Police were called to Smithton at around 11.35am following a report of a man with “a blunt weapon” who was causing a disturbance in Smithton Park.
Part of that street was later cordoned off and a large number of police vehicles and officers were spotted in the area, sparking a whirl of comments and photos on social media from bemused onlookers.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also sent two appliances to the scene after being requested to attend by police at around 12.25pm.
Police officers later revealed shortly after 3pm that they were responding to an “ongoing concern for person” incident.
And in a further update issued at 4.25pm, they added that a man had been arrested.
Witnesses said the police cordon came down shortly afterwards. The fire service said its appliances left the scene at 4.17pm.
A police spokesperson said: “Around 11.35am on Monday, we were called to a report of a man with a blunt weapon causing a disturbance on Smithton Park, Inverness.
“Officers attended and the 39-year-old man was traced to a flat nearby. He has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing.”
