Power has been restored to all of the properties affected by a mass blackout in Inverness city centre on Friday.

More than 2800 homes and businesses initially lost power after a fire at a substation in Waterloo Place in the early hours of the morning.

Around 2600 of them had their electricity connection restored by 8am, but the remainder – which included numerous city centre businesses – remained affected.

By lunchtime all but 100 properties were reconnected, and in an update this evening engineers at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Distribution confirmed the remainder had finally been powered back up at 7.05pm.

Commenting after the final properties had their power restored, a spokesperson from SSEN Distribution said: “We would like to apologise to our customers impacted by this fault on our network, and thank them for their patience as our teams worked hard to restore supplies as safely and as quickly as possible.”
