UPDATE: Daviot to Fort Augustus link road to A9 remains closed after large car fire seven miles south of Inverness

A road connecting the A9 south of Inverness to Loch Ness remains closed as police investigate a crash that caused a large car fire.

It is not known if there were any casualties in the accident on the B851 near Daviot this morning (Wednesday).

The route links the A9 with Fort Augustus and other south Loch Ness villages.

Firefighters received the emergency call at around 11.24 am and three appliances attended. They then left the scene, but had to return sometime later after the vehicle began emitting smoke again.

On this occasion, they sent one appliance from Inverness and used a hose reel jet to put out the fire, leaving the scene for the second time at around 4.45 pm – more than five hours after the alarm was first raised.

After the initial blaze, smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from some distance away.

Police Scotland confirmed their officers were still in attendance and added: “Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Inquiries are ongoing.”
