Walking tall in support of Ukraine as youngsters from Kinmylies Primary School in Inverness raise more than £4400 for Ukrainian refugees
Youngsters at an Inverness primary have been putting their best feet forward to help Ukrainian refugees.
Pupils from Kinmylies Primary are walking a collective 35 miles and so far they have raised more than £4400.
They held their sponsored walk while wearing the colours of the Ukrainian flag and Jennifer Tyronney, a principal teacher at the school, said their families have been very generous.
She said her role is to lead the school’s Rights Respecting Schools Group, which is part of the Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Award, and the pupils in this group were feeling quite helpless about the situation in Ukraine and wanted to do something to contribute.
“They showed a great interest in fundraising for the worrying situation in Ukraine and particularly for the refugees,” she said. “They decided to organise a sponsored walk to collectively walk around
35 miles.
“As we know, some families are having to walk this distance to get to some sort of safety.
“The classes, ranging from nursery completing a mile, up to P7 completing eight miles, did their walk in the school playground over the space of a week and a half.
“That’s more than 300 children all working together for such a worthy cause. To mark the end of the 35 miles, the pupils were invited to dress up in yellow and blue colours to show our support for Ukraine.
“The children have been incredibly excited to take part in this challenge and they have definitely felt more empowered by being able to do even a small thing.
“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of our school community and cannot thank all of the pupils and adults enough for their support.
“The money raised will be donated to Unicef, which is actively supporting refugees fleeing the conflict.”
