Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed there will be a General election this summer set for July 4, making it an untypically short campaign of just 43 days in total.

At stake is the end of 14 years of Conservative-led government with opinion polls placing Labour about 20 points ahead in the polls making it very likely that Keir Starmer becomes the next prime minister.

The move by Mr Sunak was likely prompted after UK inflation fell to 2.3 per cent in April and No. 10 claimed that the economy was improving.

One Invernessian said: “I was a soldier for 35 years and now have my own business, and it’s thriving, so I would vote Conservative.

Another person added: “I will vote Conservative, I have always voted conservative, but I would like to see somebody else in rather than Rushi Sunak.

“Get a woman in power.”

When talking about the change they desire, one person said: “I’m just hoping that the interest rates start coming down and people can get a little more profit.”

In terms of the decision to announce a sudden General Election, with just 43 days to prepare, one person said: “It’s been needed for a long time I think, just because of the state of general politics in the UK.

They added: “I don’t think the timing of the General Election is particularly great as I think they would have appreciated more time to prepare, but I think it has been a desire for a lot of the population to have a General Election probably from the time Sunak came into power, so I think it is a step in the right direction.”
