Aviemore resident launches GoFundMe page to save beloved Springer Spaniel Talisker’s leg after a bad fall in the Highland mountains
The “heartbroken” owner of a springer spaniel which broke its leg in three places following a mountain fall has made a plea for help to spare their beloved pooch from amputation.
Talisker (1) “took a very bad tumble” on the hills while out for a run.
Owner Sorcha Reid, from Aviemore, had hoped her pet insurance would cover the medical costs.
But she was told that it will not pay out the money needed to save her springer’s leg - as amputation will cost less than half the money needed for the £4000 operation to keep her on all four paws.
Sorcha is now seeking kind-hearted donations via GoFundMe to help cover the costs instead, as her one-year-old pup is “fit and healthy with a good chance at making a full recovery”.
And she hopes the money can be found in order to ensure Talisker - who “loves to run in the mountains, bouncing through heather and swimming in every puddle or loch big enough” - can continue to enjoy the great outdoors for many years to come.
“Forty-eight hours ago my springer spaniel pup, Talisker, took a very bad tumble down the mountain while out for a run,” Sorcha said.
“She has fractured her elbow in two places, what we now know as a humeral fracture, and her elbow is currently in 3 pieces. She needs specialist surgery from an orthopaedic practice as fast as possible if we hope to save her leg. Our insurance company won’t cover this surgery as amputation is seen as a viable option.
“We never expected anything like this to ever happen and are heartbroken that her little mountain life will change so drastically.
“The two surgical options are to remove the leg for £1600 or to try and save the leg with surgery using metal plates and screws to give her a chance at a life on four paws, costing £4000.
“Talisk will turn two years old in June. She is fit and healthy with a good chance at a making a full recovery. Paying for the immediate emergency health care, pain relief and X-rays has used the savings we had and we’re forced to reach out for any help possible.
“We know there are other animals worse off out there but anyone who knows Talisk knows she loves to run in the mountains, bouncing through heather and swimming in every puddle or loch big enough.
“We work hard to make sure she has the best life a springer could want, but we cannot afford to save her leg without help. If anyone can help however big or small it will go so far in helping her live a happy life on four paws for as long as possible.
“Thanks a million, Sorcha xx”
So far more than £2800 has been raised towards the £4k target.
