Why is new mascot for Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness a Bernese Mountain Dog?
A costumed Bernese mountain dog has been unveiled as the new mascot for children's summer activities at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness.
Nevis is set to make guest appearances at various events including a scavenger hunt.
The programme of free activities, which begins tomorrow, includes encounters with exotic animals, circus skills, stories and puppetry and making smoothies using pedal power.
Eastgate marketing manager Sarah Purdie said the centre had been looking for an identifiable character to link the club and events together.
"All the activities allow children to explore in different ways using their senses," she said.
"We wanted to use a character which would also explore – dogs explore with their noses."
Although some may think Nevis is a spaniel, he is definitely a Bernese mountain dog.
The breed takes its name from the Swiss canton of Berne where it pulled carts for the weavers and was also used as a general farm dog.
According to the Kennel Club, it is good-natured, friendly and fearless and is known as a kind and devoted family dog.
It is also slow to mature.
"Nevis is certainly very mischievous!" said Ms Purdie.
The Nevis Club runs ever Tuesday and Wednesday from 11am to 3pm until August 12.
Centre manager Chris Kershaw said: "We're thrilled to be able to offer such a diverse range of activities for children this summer.
"The centre is committed to delivering an exciting and memorable experience for visitors of all ages, and the brand-
new Nevis Club is a fantastic opportunity for young shoppers to come together and we're confident that our summer programme will provide hours of fun for families."
All activities last about 30 minutes and no booking is required.
