Schools master chef winner crowned in cooking competition at UHI Inverness

BUDDING master chefs were put to the test in the final of a schools cooking competition.

The competition took place in front of an audience of 80 parents and local chefs UHI Inverness.

The final challenged the pupils to cook a three-course meal, with a maximum budget of £15.

Finalists in the competition were Peter Forbes of Charleston Academy, Ella Cormack of Dingwall Academy, and Thea Still and Samuel Houston from Inverness Royal Academy.

Thea was crowned the schools master chef champion. She won her individual schools’ heat, and later worked in a local restaurant to gain useful cooking experience under the watchful eye of a professional chef.

Judges for the cooking final were Lady Claire Macdonald of Kinloch Lodge Hotel on Skye, and Michael Smith of Loch Bay Restaurant, Skye. The competition was organised by the Rotary Club of Inverness Culloden.

Gary Williamson, managing director of event sponsor Williamson Foodservice, said: “It’s been a delight to see this competition return after two years. As the hospitality sector experiences its own challenges going forward, it’s essential that young people understand the opportunities in our sector for rewarding careers.

“Our chef judges have been very generous in passing on their skills to our young chefs. I’m sure these experiences will stay with them while they progress on their own food journeys.”

Professor Chris O’Neil, principal and chief executive of UHI Inverness, said: “It’s been a pleasure to host an event that showcases the talent of young chefs. Working with local businesses to nurture the skills of young people is our priority and I hope this competition is the first step to successful careers for all the finalists.”
