Youngsters urged to join landmark junior parkrun in Inverness
Children in Inverness are getting ready to add to their tally of over 12,000km of running and walking at a landmark junior parkrun event.
Sunday will see the 100th event at Torvean Park, with youngsters – and their grown-ups – encouraged to come along wearing something bright to mark the occasion.
A total of 885 youngsters have taken part in the junior event, which is for those aged four to 14, clocking up an amazing 12,132km over the first 99 runs.
An average of 62 people finish the parkrun each week, with an average time of 12 minutes and 40 seconds to complete the two kilometre route. However, the course record stands at 6:58 for the boys and 7:11 for the girls.
The event is not all about speed, though, and is aimed at encouraging youngsters to get out and exercise, whether running or walking.
Organiser and co-founder Gillian Brandon said: “We’re going to ask our athletes to wear something special – we don’t want to have fancy dress costumes or anything but just something nice and colourful, headgear or something that will stand out.”
Cake and other treats are promised for finishers of the 100th event, which starts at 9.30am from Torvean Park. People should arrive 10 or 15 minutes before the start time to hear the briefing and take part in the warm up.
The organisers want to thank Lloyd Wells from Inverness Disc Golf, who helps keep parts of the park in good shape for the parkrun finishing area.
