Inverness Caley Thistle defender says reaching Scottish Cup final was written in the stars

Danny Devine does not believe in fate – but even he is beginning to suspect Inverness were destined for the Scottish Cup final.

The defender has already been all the way in the competition with Inverness, having a winners’ medal from 2015 in his collection.

Now, he is set to return to the final with Caley Thistle, after a 3-0 win over Falkirk set up a showcase match against Celtic on Saturday, June 3.

It has by no means been a straightforward route to get there. A severe injury crisis led to a distinct loss of form in the middle of the campaign, which included a defeat to Queen’s Park in the fourth round – only for an administrative error to see ICT restored to the competition.

After such drama, even Devine is thinking it was meant to be for Caley Thistle.

“Any final you reach is a massive achievement,” Devine reasoned.

“I don’t think anyone saw it coming mid-season but cup runs are always a bonus and we are absolutely delighted.

“Hopefully it’s written in the stars for us. It’s a funny one, even after being reinstated we never expected to be here so we’ve absolutely grabbed the second chance. Hopefully we can go all the way.

“Listen, Queen’s Park deserved to win that night. We had a bit of luck and got back in but we’ve not had it easy – we’ve beaten Premiership sides and now Falkirk who are a decent team. We are buzzing. I’m not a believer in fate really. Whatever comes your way comes, but I’m just buzzing to be through. We will give it a good go in the final and see what happens.”
